A wonderfully mature and well balanced grappa from Marolo distillery, based in Piedmont, Norther Italy. Established in 1977, the distillery’s specialty is producing grappa bottlings with a strong sense of terroir.

This is another such bottling, produced from red Nebbiolo grape marc from Barolo wine. This pomace is then distilled slowly in the distillery’s bain marie stills. The spirit has been matured in two different types of cask: small oak barrels for intense flavour, and interestingly, casks constructed of acacia wood. Acacia, unlike the more common European and American oak varieties, is prized for imparting texture rather than heavy vanilla flavour and toastiness. Spirits matured in Acacia are said to have a waxier mouthfeel.

So it proves with this grappa, which delivers flavours of dry grapes, prunes, almond, raisins, wine tannins and green wood, alongside touches of tobacco, nutmeg, liqourice, anise, cinnamon and clove. The texture is full and waxy, not unlike a Clynelish single malt.

Bottled at 50% ABV for a powerful drinking experience, each bottle is individually numbered, and labelled with Marolo’s classic kingfisher motif.
