A terrific single cask grappa from Trentino based distillery Villa de Varda.
This time round they’ve used pomace from the Moscato grape, one of the most diverse varieties of grape, which typically makes a sweet wine.
The pomace is collected very fresh, sometime still dripping with juice, and fermented with specially selected yeasts. Distillation occurs in Villa de Varda’s traditional copper discontinuous stills. The spirit has been aged in a single medium charred oak barrique, offering a unique drinking experience.
This grappa delivers flavours of toasted almond and hazelnut, alongside some light floral flavours, a touch of oak, vanilla, grapes, dried fruit, some funky green wood and a little peppery spice.
Single cask offerings remain something of a rarity in the grappa industry, and this is a delectable example of the style.
Just 374 bottles were produced.
