A marvellous rum blend from the celebrated rum producer, Plantation (now known as Planteray).
This bottling combines rums from three islands, but interestingly, only one from the Caribbean – Barbados. The other spirit harks from Fiji and Mauritius.
The Bajan component is produced at the West Indies Distillery, and is made from molasses distilled in both pot and column stills – giving it a funky, high ester edge. This parcel of spirit has been matured in Bourbon barrels, creating a rum with lush, oaky and vanilla-heavy notes.
The Fijan rum is made by the Rum Co. of Fiji, and is also a molasses-based spirit. This rum has been aged in charred barrels for five years, giving it a slightly smoky edge.
The rum from Mauritius is perhaps the most interesting – an unaged rhum agricole which has been made with a base of sugar cane juice and distilled in a column still, offering plenty of fresh, herbaceous flavours.
As a final product, Sealander offers a dizzying array of flavours - but remains well balanced. Expect notes of rich pineapple, mango, bananas, toffee, salted caramel, brown sugar, apples, charred oak, vanilla, grassy cane and a touch of mint.
A great, versatile rum, which is at home in cocktails, but very enjoyable sipped neat.
