A delectable grappa based amaro from stalwart Italian producers, Nardini.
Not made with pasta as the name might suggest, this liqueur’s title comes from the Italian word for “cut”, as this liqueur is actually made with a cut of 15 other Nardini bottlings. The harlequin on the label, with his patchwork uniform, reflects this production.
The history of Tagliatella actually dates back to the period following the Second World War, when many Italians did not have the funds to afford their usual grappa, liqueur or amaro. In those days, spirits were purchased at the grappa distillery itself, drawn from giant copper containers, rather than pre-bottled for sale. Under each container was a small bucket to collect the drips from the tap that occurred throughout the day. Periodically, these buckets were emptied into a barrel, and then served to those who couldn’t otherwise afford grappa.
The result is a bright, red copper coloured liqueur, which offers notes of pine, bitter herbs, zest orange, dry herbs, honey, flowers, cherry cola, dark sugar, peaches, and grappa-like green grapes.
A liqueur that shouldn’t work – but does! Tagliatella is as delicious as its history is interesting.
