Another excellent cask finished Calvados from Château du Breuil, this time matured for a time in sweet Sauternes wine casks.
Despite the distillery’s usual adherence to traditional methods (using long natural fermentations of Pays d’Auge apples grown on their small orchard) Château du Breuil have recently been experimenting with cask finishes of their Calvados, and with brilliant results!
Sauternes, a sweet dessert wine from Bordeaux, often provides casks for use in whisky production, adding notes of sweet grapes and fruits to the spirit.
Here it serves a similar role, providing the already fruity Calvados with notes of sweet white peach, white wine, grapes and custardy desserts. These accompany the bright apple acidity and delicates spices of the Calvados perfectly.
The bottling is beautifully presented, with an old fashioned cork and wax closure.
