When making this incredibly flavoursome gin, Ableforth (Master of Malt’s in-house spirit producer) “bashed up” the botanicals to release even more of their delicious flavours. This edition takes the original Bathtub Gin (which is made using infusion of cassia, cloves, cardamom, orange peel, coriander, juniper, amongst other botanicals) and bumps up the proof to a huge 57% ABV. This is known as Navy-Strength, as this was the proof that the Royal Navy insisted upon. This is because the ship’s liquor supplies would often be located close to their store of gunpowder, and if the spirit spilt onto the powder, it still had to be able to ignite, otherwise the ship would be left defenceless! Or so the story goes, it is just as likely that the spirit was brought up in proof to reduce the weight of cargo the ship was taking. Whatever the reason, what is certain is that this is a delicious, classic juniper-driven gin, with plenty of spicy earthy flavours and a whole lot of citrus too. The extra ABV really boosts the flavours, creating a gin that is as at home in a tasting glass as it is in a Gin and Tonic or Martini. Bathtub Navy Strength has picked up a string of awards, most recently the coveted Contemporary Gin Trophy at the 2017 International Wine & Spirit Competition (where it also took home a Gold Outstanding medal), whilst also winning the title of Best Compound Gin at the 2017 World Gin Awards – for the third year in a row. Without a doubt one of the best over-proof gins on the market, and an excellent tool for any bartender.
