A large bottling of this interesting offering from Zuidam.
Rogge translates from the Dutch as “rye”, and this is an entirely rye-based genever, giving it a unique character and profile.
The spirit is distilled in small red copper pot stills. 100% rye mashbills are notoriously difficult to manage, so this is an ambitious and impressive offering from the distillery. A portion of this spirit is redistilled with botanicals such as juniper, liquorice root and aniseed. The rye distillate is aged in new American oak barrels for 1 year.
The result is a spicy, oaky Genever that offers notes of bittersweet juniper, chewy liquorice, star anise, toffee, apples, intense rye spice, cinnamon, chopped herbs and a little vanilla.
Rich and full bodied, this is a fascinating Genever that will appeal to rye whiskey fans.
