A large bottle format of this fruitier, more delicate version of Zuidam’s Genever.

Distilled from a malt wine made with a mash of equal parts rye, maize and malted barley, Korenwijn literally translates as “corn wine”. Each grain plays its part: the rye provides spice and herbaceousness, the corn gives sweetness and brighter notes, and the malted barley offers a chewy texture and malty backbone. The spirit is distilled no less than four times, with a parcel of malt wine separated for a fifth distillation, that includes specially selected herbs – liquorice, juniper and aniseed. The two distillates are then combined, and diluted to 45% ABV before being aged in small American new oak barrels for one year.

The final result is a delicate, light bodied spirit that offers notes of subtle grain sweetness, rye spice, vanilla, oak, bittersweet juniper, liquorice, malted bread, apples and slight toffee.

Extremely drinkable, this would make for an interesting alternative to whisky or Cognac. Alternatively, Korenwijn could also replace gin in more spirit forward cocktails, to add extra body and depth.
