A fascinating offering from Swedish distillery Mackmyra.
This whisky has been aged predominately in former Bourbon barrels, with 10% of the spirit aged in Swedish oak (or “Svensk Ek” in Swedish) casks. These casks were produced from oak gathered from the island of Visingsö – originally planted for shipbuilding.
Before the oak is made into casks, it is cut and dried for a minimum of one year. The barrels are then heavily toasted and coopered by hand, to ensure a high quality barrel for the maturation of whisky.
The result is a spicy, oaky whisky with a spritely, spiritous character. Drinkers can expect notes of toffee, vanilla, pear, apples, caramel, ground ginger, white chocolate and gristy malt. Additional flavours of black pepper, sandalwood and chopped herbs suggest the presence of the Swedish Oak.
Bottled at 46.1% ABV for a little extra warmth and body, this is a must try for fans of world whisky.
