An interesting offering from Swedish distiller Mackmyra.

Expedition was originally created as a travel retail exclusive (hence the name). The distillery state that it was also inspired by their philosophy to “make whisky that will take you on a journey to discover things you didn’t know you like.”

This bottling has been aged initially in American and Swedish oak casks, before a finishing period in barrels that had held cloudberry wine. Cloudberry (known as knotberry in England, averin in Scotland and bakeapple in parts of North America) is a fruit somewhat similar to the mulberry. Cloudberry jams and liqueurs are popular in Sweden.

Expedition delivers notes of rich jammy berries, vanilla, juniper, spicy oak, caramel, dried fruits, liquorice and a touch of gentle peat smoke.

A rather fascinating whisky.
