A fascinating whisky from the Swedish Mackmyra distillery. This bottling takes its name from the Swedish meaning “Gold from the Mine”, this is because the spirit has been aged in a mixture of 30, 100, and 128 litre casks in the Bodås mine. The 30 litre casks have been used by the distillery since its foundation, and Mackmyra say this whisky is made partly in tribute to these barrels.
The mine is found 50m below the earth. The mine provides a cool environment, somewhat similar to a wine cellar or cave (often used for maturation in Cognac), perfect for the long maturation of spirit.
This a blend of many different casks, including Oloroso and PX sherry casks, and some containing peated whisky for a slight hint of smoke. The result is a complex, spicy and crisp whisky, with the slightest hint of flinty mineral, alongside flavours of earthy peat, apricots, dried fruit, vanilla, berries and toffee.
Gruvguld is bottled at 46.1% ABV.
This gold from the mine is a real treasure! A delicious dram from the Swedish distillery.
