Whilst Chartreuse (in its Yellow and Green forms) is known for its truly unique powerful spicy flavour, this bottling really kicks things up a notch.
This is closer to Chartreuse’s original form than the more common Green bottling we see now. Indeed, this is said to be the first tonic or Elixir created by the Carthusian Brother Antoine in 1764. This Elixir is the core of the Chartruese Green’s flavour, with the standard bottling stretching this with a lower final proof.
The final result is one of the most complex liqueurs in the world. The bottling pours a rich, emerald green colour, and has notes of powerful bitter herbs, thyme, clear honey, grass, herbal tea, peppermint, liquorice, turmeric, peppery spice, cinnamon, quinine, anise, spearmint and juniper.
Traditionally mountain climbers have enjoyed this liqueur by dripping a few drops onto a sugar cube. It can also be drunk almost like absinthe, with sugared iced water, or in cocoa.
We could also see this being used in a manner similar to cocktail bitters.
In France this unique liqueur is still classified as a medical tonic. The bottling comes with a wooden box, which is to protect it from light that can change its flavour.
