Something like a cross between a whisky and a gin, this traditional Dutch spirit is essentially a barrel aged Jenever.
Bols distillery is said to be the oldest working distillery in the world (though some Chinese distilleries have made this claim too), and they certainly know how to produce a good quality Jenever.
Corenwijn literally translates as ‘Corn Wine’, which describes the malt wine that provides the base for this spirit. This is distilled alongside juniper and herbs, to create a gin-like product (Jenever is known as the forerunner to gin). The spirit is then aged for a time in Limousin oak barrels, deepening the flavour and giving the liquid colour.
The result is an herbal, juniper-y spirit with notes of malty grain, fresh ginger, spice and slight oak.
Best enjoyed drunk neat, like a whisky.
