An excellent VSOP Cognac from a historic, family owned estate.
Bertrand dates back to the early 18th century, and is found in the heart of the Petite Fine Champagne Cru. The estate is famed for its iconic Windmill of Bel’Air, the last to be found in the town of Reaux, which is bordered by the domain’s 82 hectares of vines.
The Cognac itself is made entirely from Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes grown in the chalky soil of Petite Fine Champagne, which results in fruit with a good level of acidity and concentration of flavour – perfect for distillation. Some of the vines are as old as 80 years, producing a smaller yield of more flavoursome grapes.
The Cognac has been double distilled in small batches, before being aged for no less than 10 years (and as much as 15 years!) in Limousin and Tronçais oak casks. Bertrand VSOP offers up notes of delightful flavours of vanilla, rancio, spicy oak, flowers, nutmeg, cloves, orange rind, toffee, milk chocolate, white grapes and white wine acidity.
A high quality Cognac that could actually be classed as an XO. Top stuff from Bertrand.
