A blend of Single Malt and Single Pot Still Irish whiskey, this bottling of Writers Tears from Walsh Whiskey has been finished in Japanese Oak casks.
Mizunara oak is a rare (and expensive!) cask variety, that is known for being difficult to manage. The oak has a high moisture content and is prone to leaks. Nevertheless, it can impart some remarkable flavours to whiskey, as shown by this dram. The whiskey was finished for 9 months in the end, following an earlier maturation in ex-Bourbon barrels.
The bottling serves up classic Irish pot still notes of caramel, grassy malt and vanilla, alongside rich Mizunara hallmarks of sandalwood, coconut and fragrant woodsmoke.
A really fascinating dram, bottled at a robust proof of 55%.
