An excellent addition to St Lucia Distillers’ excellent Chairman’s Reserve range of rums. St Lucia is one of our favourite rum producers in the Caribbean, we particularly love that they do not add any additional sugar to their rums (a common practice in the industry). In 2007, a devastating fire gutted much of the distillery’s warehouse. After the rebuilding process, some casks seem to have got lost in the system, and were only discovered years later, leading to them being called “the Forgotten Casks”. These casks, several of which were very old indeed, were then blended together for this fantastic release, with the rum being labelled “Extra Aged”. This rum has been aged in former Bourbon American oak barrels. On the nose this bottling is pure old dark rum, with marvellous aromas of burnt sugar, teacake, oranges, mango and grilled pineapple. The palate is rich and dense, with a prickly sugar note, bright vanilla oak, delicious mango and succulent orange juice. The finish is long and sweet, with wonderful fruity notes. This is a tour de force of rum production, a quality product from top to bottom, and a must try for all serious rum drinkers!
