Juniper is the raison d’etre of gin. It is the powerhouse botanical, providing the key peppery, drying-sweetness that defines the spirit, and giving gin its name! Good gins are often known for their interesting and unusual botanicals, breaking the mould, something we (as drinkers) all welcome, yet all good gins have one thing in common: a great juniper character. This is something that this stellar bottle of gin has in abundance. Sipsmith Very Junipery Over Proof racks the juniper up, adding another helping to both its pot still and the vapour infusion Carter Head still. The powerful flavours are aided by a huge 57.7% ABV, and the berry notes explode onto the palate!
Despite this, the gin is eminently drinkable with rich dark chocolate and spice notes, and great balance. The small scale London distillery have produced a gin which represents the best of what the gin revival can offer- fabulous, innovative spirits. Despite the high proof and juniper forward flavours, this is an exceptionally well balance drink, equally at a home in a G&T as it is in rich gin cocktails like the 20th Century. Brilliant stuff, and a staff favourite here at Fine Drams!
