Sipsmith are one of our favourite London gin companies, based in the west of the city in a beautiful small scale distillery near to the banks of the river Thames. The company has one clear mission: to return the high quality London dry style back to its spiritual home, the city of London itself. They begin creating their fantastic spirit with the very finest English wheat spirit. This gives their gin a rare drinkability and mouth-feel. They also use fresh, pure spring water from the Lydwell spring, the source of the river Thames. Distillation occurs in stills built at Christian Carl, a family run German business that has been building stills since 1869. Prudence, the first of Sipsmith’s three stills (now accompanied by Constance and Patience) is an ingenious cross between a pot and column still, and was the first new copper still in London for nearly two centuries.
This gin, Sipsmith’s flagship, is a masterful blend of ten different botanicals: Juniper berries, Coriander Seed, Angelica Root, Liquorice Root, Orris Root, Ground Almond, Cassia Bark, Cinnamon, Orange Peel and Lemon Peel. As such the gin is very juniper forward, with a superb bittersweet quality, offset by an earthiness and wonderful bright citrus. Very refreshing in a gin and tonic, but also makes a mean Martini!
This gin was awarded a gold medal in the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Awards, whilst it picked up a silver in the 2012 competition. It also took a gold at the 2012 Great Taste Awards, and another silver in the 2014 International Wine and Spirit Competition.
