As world-whisky goes from strength to strength, more and more nations are beginning to create a distilling tradition. This whisky hails from Italy – better known for its fine wines, beers and amaro than for its malt whisky! However, this is a wonderful dram, with no less than three malted grains in the mashbill (wheat, rye and barley). This particular expression has been aged for over three years in Pinot Nero from the north-eastern region of Tyrol. It is these casks that give the whisky its name, alongside a knowing nod to one of Italy’s more hedonistic and notorious Roman emperors – Nero Germanicus. The whisky itself is a juicy, fruity expression, with delicious rye spice and a hint of bready wheat. It is bottled at 43%, and in Puni’s distinctive matte-black wrapped bottles.
