First launched in early 2018, as part of Mortlach’s range revamp, this 12 year old Mortlach replaces the rather disappointing (and poorly named) ‘Old and Rare’.
The Wee Witchie, Scots for the “Small Witch”, takes its name from the small still that allows Mortlach to make its unique, 2.81 time distilled, meaty spirit.
The whisky has been matured in a classic combination of sherry and Bourbon casks, producing a well-balanced spirit with plenty of flavour.
This Mortlach offers up flavours of powerful, meaty malted barley, accompanied by a little dirty sherry, vanilla, dried fruits, hot corn, toffee, toasted oak, milk chocolate and orange zest.
Bottled at 43.4% ABV for a little intensity and body, this bottling is a big step up from the outgoing ‘Old and Rare’, with plenty more substance and complexity.
A fitting tribute to the still that makes Mortlach’s whisky possible.
