Another lovely Irish whiskey from Hibernia Distillers and their Hyde brand.
Hyde is named after the first Irish president Douglas Hyde, and indeed, the 1860 on the bottle does not refer to the founding of a distillery, but rather the birth of Hyde himself. The company follows this theme throughout, with the title of “the Aras Cask” referring to Áras an Uachtaráin, the residence of the Irish president.
This is a single grain whiskey, which has been triple distilled and aged in former Burgundy wine casks. This has given the whiskey a beautiful, rich fruitiness, with flavours of red grapes, berries, orchard fruits, grassy grain and bright vanilla notes.
The clean, pure spirit, works superbly well with the intensity of the wine cask.
As this whiskey is bottled at 46% ABV and without chill filtration, the mouthfeel is delightfully creamy.
