Sitting towards the top of Glenrothes 2018-released Soleo Collection (there is also a 25 year old) is this outstanding 18 year old Speyside Whisky.
The Soleo Collection is so named as the whiskies in this series are aged in sherry casks, and the Soleo process is the system by which grapes are sun-dried to prepare them for sherry production. For this series, Glenrothes have replaced their hallmark vintages with straightforward age-statements.
Compared to the 10 and 12 year old expressions in this collection, the 18 year contains a far greater proportion of first-fill sherry matured whisky. This maturation, when paired with the whisky’s longer aging, has produced a deeply sherried whisky, richer and more intense that its younger counterparts.
Drinkers can expect classic Glenrothes flavours of pressed flowers, and citrus sweetness alongside dense, dessert-like notes of plums, dried fruits, cherries, jammy raspberries, dark chocolate, slight coffee, almonds, some poached pears and zingy ginger.
This whisky also weighs in a little stronger than the 10 and 12 year old, at 43% ABV, allowing its sherried flavours to better assert themselves. No artificial colouration is used in this dram.
A rich, decadent beauty from Glenrothes.
