Sitting close to the top of Glenallachie’s standard range (just a step below the 25 year old) this 18 year old forms part of the distillery’s relaunched lineup, following Billy Walker (former BenRiach and Glendronach owner) purchasing the distillery.
A real cracker, this dram has been matured in a mixture of American Oak, former Oloroso sherry casks and former Pedro Ximénez casks.
American oak and Sherry cask maturation is something of a classic combination in the whisky world, and with good reason, it can produce whiskies of exceptional poise. Such is the case with this offering, a well balanced Speyside malt which serves up flavours of deep leathery oak, dried fruit, espresso, bananas, vanilla, honey, cream, woodspice, jammy fruits, sherry and wine tannins.
Bottled at 46% ABV, and without chill filtration or colouration, this is a carefully produced dram.
A great value bottling for a whisky of this age and quality.
