The Elijah Craig whisky brand is named after its namesake reverend, Elijah Craig. Elijah Craig was the man who, according to Heaven Hill, was the first to age distillate in charred barrels, thus “inventing” Kentucky bourbon.
This is the base expression of the Elijah Craig brand, aged for 12 years.
Nose: Rye bread, thick vanilla custard, sweet cherries lead the nose. Overripe banana follows with a little smoke, stewed apples and green grass. Some slight curry powder, with a little resin and oak.
Palate: Very full mouthfeel. Stewed apples really take the lead, followed by custard, liquorice and slight honey. Spices- nutmeg, clove and mace, sublime and subtle.
Finish: Green wood, light oak and honey. Long.
Overall: What a delicious whiskey! Oaky and full, with wonderful spice and stewed apples. Shows it's great age wonderfully. A top bourbon, and great value.
