A high quality Venezuelan rum from Diplomático.
Selección de Familia was developed by Diplomático to “present a new, sophisticated tasting experience to rum connoisseurs”. This is an ambition they have certainly achieved.
The spirit has been produced at a family-owned distillery, found in the foothills of the Andes. Here they use “sugar cane honey” to produce complex rums, and molasses to make lighter styles. Fermentation length also varies depending on the sort of rum being made. They also have three different styles of still, used to make different styles of spirit: the Barbet, a French column still; a traditional Scottish double retort pot still, and a batch kettle, which came from Crown Royal whisky distillery in Canada.
For this bottling, Diplomático have combined 90% pot still rum with 5% Barbet and 5% batch kettle spirit. The blend has then been aged for up to 12 years in American white oak, ex-Bourbon barrels and former sherry casks (PX and Oloroso casks previously used to finish Diplomático Ambassador and Diplomático Single Vintage).
A combination of different spirit styles and different cask varieties has produced a complex rum that offers notes of cooked fruits, dates, fudgy vanilla, bananas, some citrus rind oils, creamy oak, plums, allspice, cracked black pepper, tobacco, white grapes and rich brown sugar.
A high quality aged rum which has been dosed with 20g of sugar – just enough to sweeten the spirit a little without overwhelming it.
