Mantuano is the rum released to replace the much-loved Reserva from Diplomático. This new rum also boasts a redesigned label still featuring Don Juancho in pride of place, and is part of their re-vamped “Tradition” range. Mantuano is a bottling of pot, kettle and column still distillate, and is matured in casks that previously held both bourbon and scotch whisky for up to 8 years. A classic Venezuelan offering, Diplomático has used sugar cane molasses and “honeys” to create this marvellous rum. On the nose this golden rum reveals complex aromas of plums, dates, cherries and sugared oak. The palate brings flavours of prunes, toffee, molasses and vanilla, with a little woodspice and a creamy crème brûlée note. The finish is lingering with spicy oak and brown sugar. Diplomático recommend using this rum in citrus-forward cocktails, but we enjoy it served over one cube of ice. Lovely stuff, and tremendous value.
