A ripper of a rye whiskey from Houston’s first legal whiskey distillery.
Yellow Rose take their name from a traditional Texan song, which details the beauty of a local woman, who inspires Sam Houston to victory over the Mexican army.
Many rye whiskies on the market are produced with a rather insipid 51% rye grain in the mashbill, which is the minimum legal requirement. This is not the case with Yellow Rose rye, which uses a mashbill of 95% rye grain, and 5% malted barley.
The spirit has been aged in American oak barrels, for between 2 to 4 years, with the majority at the older age of the spectrum.
The result is a rich, spicy whiskey with notes of peppermint, chocolate, peaches, powerful rye spice (cinnamon, pink peppercorn and slight chilli), toffee, pineapple, boiled sweets, vanilla and some candied citrus peel.
Bottled at 45% ABV for a little more body and warmth.
