One of the great misunderstandings of American distilling is the claim that for a whiskey to be Bourbon it must be distilled in Kentucky. This is not at all true, and indeed, there are some delicious Bourbons to be found beyond the borders of the Bluegrass State.
Here is one example, a superb Texan Bourbon that, rather intriguingly, has been made with a 100% Texan yellow corn mashbill. Most Bourbons include a bit of rye or malt in the recipe, and this unusual decision (which would technically allow this spirit be labelled a ‘Corn Whiskey’) further enhances the rebel spirit of this “Outlaw Bourbon”.
Outlaw Bourbon is distilled in The spirit has been matured in small American oak barrels in Houston, a city which experiences wild variation in temperature, accelerating the aging process. The angels share in this part of the world is 15% a year.
The bottling delivers notes of rich caramel, vanilla, flowers, intense bright corn sweetness, charred oak, cinnamon, chilli, peppermint, toasted cereals, and a little woodsmoke.
Bottled at 46% ABV for a little more power and warmth, the bottling was awarded 94 points in Jim Murray’s 2020 Whisky Bible.
