Old Tom gin is a style that was extremely popular during the 1800s and early part of the 20th century, that has thankfully seen a recent revival. Old Tom is sweeter than its more famous London Dry counterpart, and often has a high proportion of botanicals. Due to this sweetness, Old Tom was often used in cocktails, meaning that many classic drinks in books such as the Savoy Cocktail Book require it.
Tanqueray have played their part in this revival with the release of this Old Tom addition- an attempt to replicate a recipe dating all the way back to 1835, created by founder Charles Tanqueray. Tanqueray Old Tom contains the same botanicals as the distillery’s iconic London Dry bottling: juniper, cassia bark, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice. These give this gin the classic Tanqueray piney, citrusy notes, but with added sweetness. These flavours are aided by a healthy bump in ABV- up to 47.3%. Also welcome is the bigger bottle, a litre of this wonderful juice offering great bang for buck! The bottle itself is designed in the style of the previous Tanqueray Old Tom which was discontinued in 1921. This is a limited edition release that is sure to sell quick, so get your hands on a bottle whilst you still can!
