This is an old classic, and a connoisseur’s favourite. With its distinctive green glass stumpy bottle, Tanqueray is a familiar sight in bars across the world, recognised for its quality globally. This classic design was first introduced in the 1920s, when a range of premixed cocktails were sold by Tanqueray in bottles made to resemble cocktail shakers. The pre-mixed cocktails may have fallen by the wayside, but Tanqueray remains a favourite of cocktail bartenders the world over, who value its rich mouthfeel and citrusy, zesty palate. These remarkable flavours are due to Tanqueray using an extraordinary amount of juniper to make their spirit, considerably more than other market leaders.
Tanqueray was first distilled in the Bloomsbury region of London, that would later become famous for the “Bloomsbury Group” of authors and painters- it seems this area has always attracted creative genius! After Charles Tanqueray founded the distillery in 1830, it would be bombed in WWII, eventually leading to production being moved to Cameron Bridge grain distillery (famed for their single grain whiskies). The gin is double distilled for purity, and whilst the botanical recipe is a closely guarded trade secret we know that it contains juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice. This slightly higher strength bottling ensures that Tanqueray will not be lost in even the most complex cocktails. A truly lovely bottling, and one of the best value gins on the market.
