Savanna distillery, which is based on the Isle of Réunion in the Indian Ocean, produces a range of rums including Rhum Agricoles and molasses-based spirits. This bottling is of the latter, and in a fascinating, rarely seen style. Grand Arôme, as the spirit is known, is a high ester, super funky rum usually produced for blending purposes and not often available for purchase as a stand alone offering.

Lontan means something akin to “old fashioned” in the Creole of Réunion, and refers to the old time style of producing this spirit. In making this bottling, the molasses are fermented for a considerably longer time than is usual, ensuring the yeast has plenty of time to develop delicious, complex flavours.

The final result is a striking, intense Grand Arôme rum, with notes of overripe pineapple, tomato leaf, funky molasses, red apple skins, strawberries, coffee, anise and vanilla.
