Another fabulous world whisky from an unusual source, this time Switzerland! The Locher Brewery, who produces this whisky, has been owned and operated by the Locher family for five generations, producing beer and spirits for over a century. This whisky is made from barley grown in the Swiss alps, and water sourced from these mountains. This altitude, with its associated cold, changeable weather, produces a grain which is more resilient and flavoursome. This whisky has been finished in Pinot Noir casks, resulting in a spirit that is juicy, rich and fruity. On the nose there are fruity, malty aromas, with rich vanilla, toffee, caramel, and toasted oak and some wonderful red fruits. The palate is dense and vanilla lead, with fruit flavours building with time. There are some cracking burnt sugar flavours here, with delicious bright oak notes. The finish is short and sweet, with that rich, fruity wine flavours from the cask-maturation. These flavours are given a boost as the whisky is bottled without chill filtration or colouring at bottled at 48% ABV. A fabulous and surprising whisky from Switzerland!
