A rather remarkable collection of Panamanian rums from the Abuelo company.

Each of these smaller 200ml bottling has been aged for 15 years, and each receives a different cask finish.

One bottling is finished in casks that have previously held Oloroso sherry. Oloroso is a medium dry style of fortified wine, known for imparting a spicy, nutty flavour to spirits. Here it has given Abuelo’s naturally crisp, tropical rum notes of dark dried fruits (prunes and figs particularly), nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves and toasted almond. The final product is an opulent and sophisticated rum.

Another bottling has been finished in former Cognac casks, giving the rum notes of bright sweet grapes, floral perfume, a little barrel funk and dried fruits. These notes perfectly compliment the flavours of molasses, brown sugar, banana and tropical fruits offered by Abuelo’s spirit.

The final bottling has been finished in former Tawny port casks. Tawny ports are wines that been aged in wooden barrels (usually for around 3 years), giving the wine a golden brown colour. They often possess a nutty, complex character. With this bottling, the cask has imbued the rum with notes of sweet red berries, blackcurrant cordial, pomegranate, dessert wine and nutty spice.

An excellent opportunity to observe the effects of different types of barrel on the rum. This set would make the perfect gift for any rum lover.
