Another superb, provenance-focused single malt whisky from Islay distillery Bruichladdich.
Port Charlotte is the name given to Bruichladdich’s super-peated whisky, and this bottling certainly fits the bill, clocking in at 40ppms of smoky phenols.
The spirit is made exclusively from barley grown in the 2012 harvest on the island of Islay, at the Cruach, Island, Dunlossit, Coull, Rockside, Sunderland and Mulindry Farms.
Distilled in 2013, the spirit was then aged in a combination of former Bourbon barrels and ex-wine casks from the Pessac-Leognan region of France, part of Bordeaux – Pessac-Leognan is famed for the quality of its red wines. In total, this whisky was aged for eight years.
Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 offers notes of floral peat smoke with building earthiness, orange zest, bananas, toffee, malty biscuits, red currants, apricot, cherries, coconut in dark chocolate, sea spray, charred oak and marzipan.
An excellent addition to the celebrated Port Charlotte range. This dram has been bottled at 50% ABV and without chill filtration.
