A fascinating eaux-de-vie from the French AOC of Alsace.
Found just on the border with Germany (indeed, the region has been the catalyst for several Franco-German conflicts), Alsace is best known for the high quality wines it produces, particularly Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling. This Marc, or pomace brandy, has been made with the skins left over after the Gewürztraminer grapes have been pressed for wine.
Unlike other Marc brandies in France, there is no requirement for the spirit to be matured in oak, and it is found here perfectly clear and unaged. This youthful presentation allows the natural flavours of the grape and distillation process to really take hold. This bottling has been produced at the Jos Nusbaumer distillery.
The result is a fragrant yet fiery spirit, which serves up typical Gewürztraminer flavours of lychee and tropical fruits, alongside notes of green grapes, vanilla, almond slivers, white chocolate, peppery spice and powdered sugar.
Best served ice cold.
