A lovely offering from Mount Gay.
This Bajan rum is a blend of column and pot still spirits, though with the balance tipping slightly in favour of the heavy pot still spirit, which has been twice distilled. This spirit is less pure than the distillate from the column stills, but these impurities actually provide character and flavour in the final product.
Furthermore, this rum has been finished heavily charred former Bourbon barrels (the “Black Barrel” of the title). This imparts to the spirit a dense, sweet and slightly smoky character to the spirit.
A delightful rum which is perfectly balanced, with sweet and dry notes in harmony and beautiful sweet sugar flavours, accompanied by some heavier pot-still character. The proof is kicked up to 43% ABV, allowing these flavours to ring true.
A top quality spirit here, which is perfect both when drunk neat or mixed into cocktails.
