The Michter’s US*1 Sour Mash was released in 2012, and is the resurrection of the original Michter’s Sour Mash which was immensely popular during the 1970’s and 1980’s. It is rather unique, as it cannot be labeled bourbon, rye, or even wheat whiskey, due the use of a rather unique selection of grains.
The “Sour Mash” name of this whisky originates from a term of the same name used for the whiskey productions process, where some of the previously fermented mash is used to start the fermentation of the new mash, which is very similar to the making of sour dough bread.
