A South African rum from the Mhoba brand – which was founded in 2015.
A holistic operation, everything from fermentation to labelling happens onsite. Indeed, the rum is made using freshly pressed juice of the Nkomazi sugar cane.
Distilling takes place in pot stills created by Robert Greaves, the founder of the distillery. The spirit is then aged initially in demijohn style bottles, which also contain American oak pieces, which have been cut and toasted at the distillery. Then, there’s a finishing period in South African whisky casks.
The end result? A fragrant and funky rum with notes of ripe banana, fresh cane, pineapple, some high-ester zing, a vegetal edge, lime rind, vanilla, a little light oak and charcoal.
Definitely distinctive. One of the rum purists, fans of Agricoles and ‘hogo’ Jamaican rums.
