A lovely citrussy gin from the Italian Malfy company.
Malfy, who take their name from the Amalfi coast, supposedly one of the finest areas for the growth of lemons. Indeed, Malfy source some of their lemons from this region, alongside 5 other botanicals.
The gin is produced using Italian juniper in Torino Distillati, a distillery which has been in business since 1906. The distillery is run by the Vergano family, who themselves have been making gin since the 1970s.
To make this bottling Malfy use a mixture of 20% Amalfi Coast lemons, and 80% Sicilian lemons, which is macerated in a wheat distillate, before being pressed, creating an intense lemony extract, which is distilled alongside Tuscan juniper, coriander, liquorice, cassia, orange peel and grapefruit peel. Distillation occurs in a vacuum still, so that the temperature can be lower, so as to preserve the flavour of the delicate ingredients.
The final result is an intensely citrussy gin, with notes of lemon sherbet, fresh lemon flesh, grapefruit rind, slight coriander, and piney juniper.
Excellent in a G&T or Martini – but forego the citrus garnish here, some juniper berries work better.
