An excellent single vintage Calvados from the family owned Lemorton distillery.
This family run enterprise is unlike most Calvados on the market in that they use a majority of pears in their Calvados. This is because the distillery is not located in the Pays D’Auge region, but in the appellation of Domfrontais, which has the perfect soil for growing pears. Domfrontais rules require any cider or Calvados produced in the area to contain a minimum of 30% pears, but Lemorton go far beyond this, including around 70% pears and just 30% apples.
The fruits used to create this Calvados are grown at the distillery’s on-site 9 acre orchard, fermented in oak barrels for 11 months, before being distilled in their single alembic. As a single vintage Calvados, the spirit is the product of one distilling season and one harvest.
Distilled in 1989, the Calvados has been long aged in French oaks, producing a final product of a rare quality.
Drinkers can expect notes of vivid, juicy orchard fruit, alongside touches of honeysuckle, vanilla, spicy oak, chocolate, cedarwood, cigar smoke, toffee, tropical fruits, dried fruit and dessert wine. Perfectly balanced between the acidity and sweetness of the fruits and the spiciness of the barrel.
Another stellar bottling from one of the very finest producers out there.
