The new limited edition Ledaig 18 year old, released in 2015, from the Tobermory distillery, on the Isle of Mull. This is a wonderful peated single malt whisky which has been finished in Spanish sherry wood, imparting a distinct sweetness which greatly compliments the spirit. The bottle is presented in a very nice and sturdy wooden box.
Nose: Quite herby: oregano, coriander, white pepper. A wave of sherried fruits follows, with figs and prunes and the fore, and smoke in the background. Malty toffee and earthy peat come through after a while.
Palate: Thick, pungent, sherried prunes and figs. Some blackberries and apples. Earthy dense peat. Medium bodied mouthfeel with slight ashiness, a good malty core though. Toffee with slight herbaceous and peppery notes.
Finish: Quite long, sweet and smoky with hints of pepper and sea spray.
Overall: A very impressive sherried whisky. Complex and satisfying, this is one of those fruity, spicy, smoky whiskies that hits all the sherry sweet spots. Highly recommended.
