Here’s something you don’t see every day, a gin produced by a Calvados producer.
Christian Drouin is much loved in their home country for creating a delicious and high quality Calvados apple brandy. Drouin are a family owned business now in their third generation.
For this gin they have reformulated the original spirit a little, taking a base spirit produced with more than 30 different kinds of apple, and 8 different aromatics designed to recall the flavours found in the brand’s Calvados.
Rose and lemon give a delicate subtle fragrance. Ginger, vanilla, cinnamon and almond impart a smooth spiciness and body. Cardamom rounds out the body and emphasises the fruity notes. Finally, juniper and apple give the gin a powerfully fruity, crisp and bittersweet note.
The overall profile is a spicy, fragrant and floral one, with some touches of berry, almond and crunchy apple, and a backdrop of dense juniper.
Produced in small batches and bottled at 42% ABV, this is a sumptuous and well crafted gin that is best enjoyed served simply over ice, with an apple garnish.
