Another excellent bottling from Laurent-Perrier, the world’s third best selling Champagne house.
First launched back in 1959, this Champagne was the first multi-year prestige cuvée. It is a blend of 3 of Laurent-Perrier’s finest vintages in recent years. Only the best crus from the top dozen most prestigious villages are used. The wine is made with a mixture of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, with the Chardonnay making up slightly more of the blend.
Aged on lees for about five years, this wine has had plenty of time to develop complexity and flavour.
This Champagne serves up notes of creamy vanilla, butter, pear, apples, flowers, grapefruit, lime rind, honey, almond, hazelnut, raisins, freshly baked pastries and meringue. The wine is a clear hay colour, with a medium body and small bubbles with a tireless effervescence.
The wine takes its name from the reign of Louis XIV of France, also known as “the Sun King” for his transformation of the Kingship into a God-like status, and for his patronage and love for the arts. His 72 year long reign is the longest recorded of any monarch in Europe, and was known as the Grand Siècle – the Great Century. The bottle is designed to recreate the style of wine bottle used during this time.
A truly terrific Champagne, often ranked in the high 90s by critics.
