Some whisky bottlings are simply iconic, and this is one of them. Laphroaig 25 Year Old is one of the biggest hitters on the market, and this 2018 edition continues the tradition.
This delectable 25 year old has been aged in a mixture of second fill Oloroso sherry cask and former Bourbon American oak barrels. The result is a dram of extraordinary depth and quality.
At such a great age, the peat has become a little more muted and elegant, offering a warming heat, rather than a burning fire. The qualities of the casks shine through strongly with the sherry cask providing subtle notes of stone fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, citrus rind, prunes, sour cherries and old oak, whilst the Bourbon barrel has imparted a vanilla richness, toffee, peaches and cakey sweetness. The classic Laphroaig notes of medicinal sea spray and oil are still present.
Bottled at a formidable 52% ABV, and without chill filtration or artificial colouration, this is an expertly crafted whisky.
One of the finest drams to come out of Islay, a truly once in a lifetime experience.
Absolutely superb - drink with Hoyo or Ramon Allones cigar. Drinks fine straight out of bottle but watering down to 45-48% is best. Also, cork is piece of shit that may not stick in bottle neck or may disintegrate - have wine cork on hand.
