Back in the day, whisky used to be placed into smaller casks, a quarter of the size of a normal barrel, to be transported by horse.
One of the side-effects of this process was an increase in the oakiness and speed of maturation of the whisky, with the greater oak to spirit ratio ensuring plenty of contact with the wood.
Laphroaig have revived this style, aging the spirit for five years in American oak, before a finishing period in the smaller casks.
The result is a spirit of superb balance between the distillery’s medicinal, peaty and powerful house style, and the rich vanilla, custard, honey and spices of the smaller oak barrel. High-notes of espresso, cola, chili spice and buttered malt really set this dram apart.
What’s more, this whisky bottled at a very healthy 48% ABV, and without chill filtration, ensuring a full and powerful mouthfeel and palate.
An excellent value for money offering from one of Islay’s greatest distilleries.
