Another new Irish whiskey hitting the market. Kinahan’s is something of an ancient brand, first being established in 1779 by Daniel Kinahan. The brand went from strength to strength, twice receiving the royal arrant, from two different monarchs (Queen Victoria and King Edward VII). In the 1860s, this became the preferred whiskey of Jerry Thomas “the father of American mixology”.
The brand, like many other Irish spirits, was lost during the 20th century, but has recently been revived, with superb whiskies such as this one, a ten year old Irish single malt matured in American oak.
This whiskey is rich in notes of caramel, grassy malt, pineapples toffee, black tea, and citrus. Kinahan’s 10 year old is non chill filtered, and bottled at a warming strength of 46% ABV, giving the flavours a boost.
The Irish whiskey boom shows no sign of slowing, and with releases as good as these, there is no reason it should!
