Double trouble from Johnnie Walker! This is a relatively recent addition to the historic company’s esteemed range, having been permanently added to the line up in 2011.
Double Black follows a similar formula to the iconic Black Label (though does not carry a 12 year old age statement), but kicks up the smokiness a little with a higher quantity of Islay malt whisky (alongside some Talisker), and some whisky that has been aged in heavily charred oak casks. The result is a more intense and flavoursome dram, with rich, peaty iodine flavours.
Yet, this whisky retains perfect balance and Johnnie Walker sophistication, with the peatiness tempered somewhat by the cereal sweetness of the grain whisky in this blend. A little mainland Scotch Malt whisky rounds out the blend with depth and quality.
Reflecting the darker, peatier style of this blend, Johnnie Walker have decked it out in black glass, accompanying the distinctive slanting black label.
Top stuff, and great value for money in this larger 1 litre bottling.
