A peated expression from Australia’s largest capacity distillery. Typically, Hellyers Road uses exclusively Tasmanian barley and tries to use Australian sourced casks where they can (a task made easier by Australia’s phenomenal wine industry). However, in 2004, the distillery purchased 50,000 tonnes of peated malt whisky from a malting near Inverness. This allowed them to create peated whiskies, such as this one.
This lightly peated malt was not created in the manner found commonly in Scotland, where the distillery decides to peat the malt to a lower level. Rather, as Hellyers Road bought the malt already peated, they decide to create a lightly peated whisky by blending a small amount of their peated spirit with their classic Original Single Malt. The whisky was then matured in ex-bourbon barrels. The slight hint of smoke lends this whisky an extra dimension of flavour, with the toffee and malty flavours of the ex-bourbon cask pairing fantastically with the peat smoke. This whisky is bottled at 46.2% ABV, without colouring or chill filtration.
