A top notch Grande Champagne Cognac, forming part of Grosperrin’s terrific “Les Lots” series.
This range illustrates the depth and breadth of Grosperrin’s reserves, by bottling wonderful examples of fine old Cognac.
The bottling we have here was originally produced by a winegrower in the Salles-d’Angles region of Grande Champagne. The father of the family had, alongside his ancestors, established an enviable collection of Cognac stock.
The oldest casks in the inventory were the subject of a bitter family debate, and it took the family quite some time to be persuaded to sell them on. This bottling represents one of the oldest stocks in the collection, having been matured for a great many years in a 1000 litre cask, situated in a clay-floored cellar.
After Grosperrin purchased the stock, it was transferred into 350 litre barrels, aged in their cellars in Saintes and ever so slightly reduced in strength in February 2016.
The final result is a Cognac that serves up dense flavours of dried flowers, prunes, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, dark chocolate, a little forest floor, rich oak, rancio, dried fruits, plums, citrus rind and rich wine tannins.
Bottled at 47.5% ABV, this is an assertive, powerful spirit.
