The ninth edition in Highland distillery Glenmorangie’s excellent Private Edition series. Spios (pronounced “spee-oss”) is taken from the Scots Gaelic for “Spice”, a reference to the warm, wintery flavour profile of this dram.

Indeed, this dram has been fully aged in former Rye whiskey casks, which had held spirit with a whopping 95% Rye-mashbill whiskey for 6 years.

The result is a bright, spicy whisky, with herbaceous notes, touches of cloves, cinnamon and star anise, thick vanilla custard, mint, toffee, tropical fruits, plums, cherries and strawberries.

The whisky is presented without chill-filtration, and at an ABV of 46%, allowing the full flavours of this dram to be enjoyed.

A welcome experimentation from this giant of the distilling world, this is well worth trying for fans of Glenmorangie, showing off the natural spicy notes of the spirit.
